Library 2.0 refers to the "Social Mediaised" library services model which delivers a more interactive platform and services model. It is the Library version of Web 2.0 which allows collaborative interaction and sharing of information and media via new technological platforms and applications. But this technological change is underpinned by a change in underlying philosophy to adopt a strategy of constant change.
The new Library 2.0 "phrase coined by Michael Casey in 2005 means that libraries:
- Adopt a strategy of constant evolution
- Facilitate a participatory role for library users
- Encourage user participation and feedback in the management of library services
- Provide services both virtual and physical
- Deliver a web-based technology platform and applications commensurate with that utilised by businesses, educational institutions and government agencies
